A NOT SO DISTANT FUTURE FILM

Who hasn’t seen the blockbuster movie “The Hunger Games? ”Almost everyone, regardless of their age has at least heard about the plot of this dystopian film, which narrates the life of a young woman thirty years in the future.  But why has it had such an impact on today’s society?

The story unfolds in a world where ethnocentrism is the norm;  nothing matters more than the color of your skin or the origin of your lineage, which are used to determine your civil rights. The spoon-fed aristocracy lives a life of luxury, investing all their time and money in banal entertainment, while those from lower backgrounds break their backs working in order to appease an addicted populace, glued to television programme involving the exploitation of young people between the ages of 13 and 17. Doesn’t this sound familiar?

Effectively, this film is little more than a metaphor for  nowadays society,  where aristocracy represents the Western consumerist society, oblivious to the well-being of people producing their goods. As a result, they live blissfully unaware of the dire condition in which other humans, often not even considered such, live.

It’s therefore no wonder why this film has been such a great success. Contradictory as it might seem,  in order to produce a good futuristic film,  it’s a prerequisite to base it on present problems. Otherwise, viewers will unconsciously regard it as too far from reality and fail to emphasize with the characters.

Taking all the outlined factors into account I would consider “The Hunger Games” as one of the best films in all cinema history. Not to mention that its main character is portrayed by the world-famous actress Jennifer Lawrence. I will consequently recommend it to everyone, especially to those relishing a futuristic film with a good foundation.
